What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the modern way to go to the dentist - with no fear and no discomfort!
Almost twenty years ago, Dr. Ghodsi realized that many of the people who needed him the most weren’t getting the care they need. Fear of the dentist is very real, and very common. Discomfort and fear make people avoid the dentist, leaving dental problems untreated for years - even decades! Sedation dentistry made it possible for Dr. Ghodsi to help these patients get past their fears, and he has been a leader in the field here in Las Vegas ever since.
With sedation, even the most fearful patient can be safely medicated to make them comfortable and relaxed before treatment even starts. Highly trained dental professionals know exactly the right type and amount of sedative medications you need. The patient just lays back under a warm blanket on a comfortable chair, and before they know it, the whole thing is over. Best of all the whole appointment just feels like a dream!

We’ll discuss all the sedation options with you to see exactly what treatment is right for you. Some patients only want or need light sedation. There are a variety of methods available to us that provide lighter levels of sedation. Many dental offices can offer this, just like we do. The experience and training of Dr. Ghodsi and his team also lets them offer patients the highest and deepest levels of sedation, so they can treat almost any patient.
It’s actually pretty common for patients to be so fearful that they say, “I need to be out” for my appointment. We understand how they feel! At Lasting Smiles, we have sedation options for everyone. Our IV sedation patients stay perfectly comfortable, and are safely monitored and cared for through their whole procedure. Some people call this deep sedation “sleep dentistry”. The experience is so comfortable and relaxing, patients often wonder why they waited so long.

IV sedation, sometimes called "sleep dentistry", can provide a deeper sedation that many patients want and need. Lasting Smiles is trained and certified to provide all levels of sedation, while keeping patients safely monitored and comfortable.
Many people can be comfortably sedated with just a few small pills. Oral conscious sedation is a great option for some people. It often allows patients to be so relaxed that they feel like they slept through the whole visit.
Our extensive experience with sedation dentistry has allowed us to develop some cutting-edge methods that are very effective. We use a combination of sedation methods, which is extremely effective and creates a very pleasant patient experience.

Who is a candidate for sedation dentistry? Sedation Dentistry is great way for any patient that wants a pleasant experience at the dentist. We have used sedation to treat patients who:

Our extensive training and experience in sedation dentistry allows us to offer you sedation options not available in most practices. So why don’t all dentist do COMBO SEDATION?
- TRAINING. In order to qualified to perform sedation dentistry a dentist would have to gain additional training to become proficient in sedation.
- FACILITY. The dental facility needs to be suitable for sedation and certified by Nevada Board of Dental Examiners
- TIME. It takes additional time to prepare patients for each appointment and most offices want to get patients in and out or treat multiple patients at the same time.
- COST. There is more expenses to the practice to do a sedation appointment but at our practice we consider the additional cost as part of doing business to a satisfied patient.

Every patient is different, and has different wants and needs. At Lasting Smiles, Dr. Ghodsi and the team will talk with you and conduct a thorough examination to make sure they can recommend treatment that is right for you. Your experience may be different, depending on your treatment plan - but this is what a sedation appointment is like for many people:

Before the Appointment
During Treatment
You've already met the team at Lasting Smiles, and you are ready to start your personalized treatment plan. The night before the sedation visit, you take a sedative pill Dr. Ghodsi prescribed to help your body to start relaxing.
Once the oral sedatives have you comfortable, if you are receiving IV sedation, this will begin under close observation and monitoring. You will be so relaxed by this point that all your fears and anxieties will probably be just a distant memory. You may need additional sedative during longer appointments, but no matter how long it lasts, most patients will tell us the whole thing felt like a dream!

Getting Started
After Treatment
A companion will drive you to the office an hour before the appointment is scheduled to start. The team will help you into a comfortable dental chair and cover you with a warm blanket. You'll be given a couple of small pills to get the sedation started, and the team will start monitoring your vital signs to ensure your health and safety through the visit. No treatment will start until you are completely comfortable and relaxed.
When the treatment is finished and the sedation starts wearing off, you'll get to see your new smile! You may be amazed to see that years of dental problems have been taken care of, while you feel like you've just had a peaceful and relaxing nap! Just to be extra careful, we'll keep you in a wheelchair until it is safe to release you to leave. You'll be driven home by your companion, who will stay with you for the rest of the day. The next day will just be a regular day - except that you'll love your new smile in the mirror!

Dr. Sharam Ghodsi does Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry and has been changing lives for over 30 years. He is truly an artist, and patients travel to Las Vegas from all over the world for a beautiful, personalized smile. This Las Vegas Implant dentist grew up in Southern California and, at the age of 20, received his Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacology from University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1988, he received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Southern California where he continued to teach dentistry as a faculty member.
Since 1988, Las Vegas implant dentist Dr. Ghodsi has maintained a private practice emphasizing comprehensive implant, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry in Orange County, California.
